Two women sit in the shade of a broad tree, one of them with a brush in hand, as if the afternoon has been given over to painting and rest. The scene is set on open grass, a common leisure setting for families of the period, when outdoor pastimes were valued as part of domestic life. Pay attention to the clothing: the long skirts, fitted bodices, and wide-brimmed or shaded headwear reflect the dress conventions that governed how women could appear outdoors. The garments tell as much about social expectation as the activity itself.
