Two men in tall top hats stand on a checkered floor, and the sketch captures both the formal headwear and the patterned room in a few quick lines. Through much of the nineteenth century, the top hat was standard formal dress for men, worn for city outings, church, and calls on friends, so its presence points to a dressed-up occasion. Checkered tile and marble floors were a fashionable feature of Victorian halls and parlors, and artists often drew such interiors to study light, perspective, and the details of dress. Looking closely, the loose, rapid strokes show how a sketch can record fashion as well as place.
