Few posters of the war are as spare as this one: it uses only type, and its appeal rests on a single figure, 2,000,000 garments. Issued under the auspices of the American Red Cross and dated 1917, the year the United States entered the war, it addressed people in occupied northern France and Belgium, where German occupation since 1914 had left many civilians with too little to wear. The lack of imagery suggests the organizers expected the scale of the need to speak for itself, asking American readers to picture how many people stood to be helped.
