Few advertising posters of the period put so many stage names on one sheet. This 1901 color lithograph by Leonetto Cappiello promotes Ferrari pasta, including egg and vegetable noodles and macaroni, and its printed names read like a roster of the Paris stage: Mounet-Sully, Réjane, Coquelin aîné and cadet, Jane Hading, and others. Using famous actors to lend prestige to a consumer product was a growing practice in France at the turn of the century, and the poster shows how advertising borrowed the glamour of the theater. Cappiello, who worked in bold, simplified figures, became one of the leading poster artists of this era, and his work helped establish the poster as a form of street art.
