Kingsford's Oswego Starch, a color lithograph from about 1885, is an advertisement that sells a household product through a scene of women at their domestic work. The print was issued by Julius Bien & Co. of New York, a firm known for high-quality chromolithographs in the late nineteenth century. Starch was a staple of laundry day, used to stiffen collars, cuffs and petticoats, and advertising cards like this one were often tucked into homes or handed out by grocers, making the product's name familiar to a broad public. Its subjects, women at laundry work and at the ironing board, point to the heavy labor that home laundering required before electric appliances and commercial laundries became common.
