Claudette Colbert's name leads this 1934 lobby card for Universal's film of Fannie Hurst's novel *Imitation of Life*. Hurst's 1933 story follows a widowed mother who builds a pancake business while her daughter, played here by Rochelle Hudson, struggles with a wish to pass as white. Lobby cards like this one were displayed in theater lobbies to draw audiences, and the film's focus on the bond between mother and daughter, rather than romance alone, is worth noticing when viewing it today.
