The title *Under the Rose* draws on the old phrase *sub rosa*, meaning something said or done in secret or confidence, so the name hints at a private exchange before the viewer reaches the figures. Currier & Ives issued the print in New York around 1872. The firm sold inexpensive lithographs to a broad public for decades, and its hand-colored sheets were finished by workers applying color to many copies of a single design. The subject heading places the print among scenes of clothing and dress, a theme that suited the fashion-conscious market of the early 1870s, when the bustle and elaborate trimmings were at their height.
