The title on this 1924 Chicago negative has rubbed away in part, so the exact subject survives only as a fragment, but the plate still records the city in that year. The National Photo Company produced a large body of commercial views for publication in the early twentieth century, and this image was made on a glass plate, a format that held fine detail in a frame of 4 by 5 inches or smaller. The streaks and blemishes visible on the glass come from the natural breakdown of its original coatings rather than from the scene itself, a reminder of how fragile these plates are as they age.
