A glass negative measuring 4 by 5 inches or smaller, this portrait is labeled "Miss Florence King of Chicago" and dated March 23, 1921, though those details come from notes the National Photo Company wrote on the negative sleeves and have not been independently verified. The company, a Washington, D.C., firm, produced many portraits and views in the early twentieth century, and its negatives later reached the Library of Congress through a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French. Viewers may notice streaks and blemishes across the plate, which the record attributes to natural deterioration of the original coatings.
