Shown in left profile and lighting a cigar, the sitter is Arthur Hendrick Vandenberg, the Michigan Republican who served in the United States Senate from 1928 until his death in 1951. The caption card records no date, so the portrait is best placed within his long Senate career, which spanned the Great Depression, the Second World War, and the early Cold War. Vandenberg is remembered for moving from a leading isolationist to one of the most influential Republican backers of bipartisan postwar foreign policy, including the Marshall Plan and the North Atlantic Treaty. Informal images like this one, showing a politician off the podium, offer a useful contrast to the formal portraits usually made of senators.
