Few cards from this period carry as much visual punch as this one, whose gold border frames the image and sets it apart from plainer tobacco-issue cards. The Library's staff gave it the title "Gold Borders" because the card itself has no name printed as a title. It belongs to the T205 series, issued in 1911 by the American Tobacco Company, which tucked such cards into its cigarette packages to encourage buying. Collectors today study these small cards for their player portraits, printing methods and the marketing habits of the era.
