The gold border that gives this card its name sets it apart from the plainer tobacco cards of its era. The American Tobacco Company issued it in 1911 as one of the many baseball cards packed with its cigarettes, where the stiff cardboard protected the cigarettes and gave buyers a reason to collect. The set ran to hundreds of players, and the gold frame makes these cards stand out among the other tobacco issues of the 1910s. The Library's record notes that the title was devised by staff, and the card is part of the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection of baseball cards.
