A line engraving of the front page of the *New York Family Story Paper* for October 13, 1873, which leads with a serialized version of *Charlotte Temple*, the sentimental tale of a young English girl abandoned by her lover in New York. Susanna Rowson first published the novel in 1791, and it became one of the most widely read American books of the early republic. By 1873 it had been reprinted for decades, and story papers like this one, cheap weeklies of serialized fiction for family readers, kept its melodrama in circulation. The page shows how a century-old novel could still reach urban readers through the popular press after the Civil War.
