A four-story townhouse whose entrance is framed by pilasters and topped with a curved pediment anchors this glass negative, which the cataloger placed tentatively in New York. Classical doorways like this were a common feature of row housing in American cities around 1900, when Beaux-Arts and Colonial Revival styles shaped many new residential blocks. The negative belongs to the Detroit Publishing Company, which documented towns, cities and scenery in the early twentieth century using large-format plates that recorded architectural detail sharply. Because the location was assigned later rather than recorded at the time, the exact street and house remain unidentified.
