Five minutes into the race, the yachts of the Detroit Boat Club are still close together on the water, a moment when the start is settled but the finish is far off. The club, founded in 1859, sailed and raced on the Detroit River, and regattas like this one drew spectators to the waterfront during the early 1900s. The picture is an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which documented the city and region around 1900 to 1910. The plate came to the Library of Congress through a 1949 gift to the State Historical Society of Colorado.
