Little is recorded about the specific scene beyond a bracketed place name and a date range of 1927 to 1928, so the picture is best read against its period. China in those years was in turmoil: the Nationalist army under Chiang Kai-shek moved north in the Northern Expedition to break the power of regional warlords, and a Nationalist government was established at Nanjing in 1928. Photographs from the era, often made by foreign residents, travelers and missionaries, offer a rare visual record of city life and ordinary people during those upheavals. The dating and location rest on an unverified caption, so viewers should treat them as provisional.
