A stone building stands in the picture while nomad tents appear in the distance, a pairing of permanent architecture and temporary dwellings that sets this sketch apart in northwestern China. The artist is unknown and the caption card gives no date, so the record places it only among 19th-century Russian drawings of China in the Yudin Collection at the Library of Congress. Sketches like this were often made by travelers crossing borderlands where settled communities and herding peoples lived side by side. A possible counterpart in an album of Russian drawings suggests it may have been one of a numbered series.
