The interior of the finishing shop at the Detroit Ship Building Co. offers a rare look inside an industrial workplace rather than the usual view of a shipyard from outside. Made as an 8 by 10 inch glass plate negative sometime between 1900 and 1915, it dates from a period when Detroit's shipyards were building iron and steel freighters for Great Lakes trade. Finishing shops handled the fitting out of vessels, the stage where interior work and final details were completed before delivery. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that issued many views of American cities and industries, made the image.
