Set on the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C., the Jefferson Memorial is a domed, circular structure built to honor the third president and principal author of the Declaration of Independence. Architect John Russell Pope designed it in a classical style, and it was dedicated on April 13, 1943, the 200th anniversary of Jefferson's birth. Passages from his writings are carved on the interior walls, and a bronze statue of him stands beneath the dome. A text page like this one pairs the written account with an illustration, offering a view of the memorial's form as well as the story of its creation.
