This view shows the Jefferson Memorial building in Forest Park, St. Louis, which was built to honor Thomas Jefferson and the Louisiana Purchase. Forest Park had hosted the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition, and the memorial grew out of that commemorative spirit. The building's classical, white-columned design reflects the Beaux-Arts taste of the early 20th century, when American cities favored monumental architecture for civic institutions. It has long housed the Missouri Historical Society, and the photograph captures it at a time when it stood as a major civic landmark in the city.
