Bicycles and tricycles appear in this 1890 view of the rear of Independence Hall in Philadelphia, which sets it apart from the more familiar front-facade images of the building. The stereograph card, numbered 916, was made by the photographer George Barker, who lived from 1844 to 1894. Stereo cards like this were sold in sets and viewed through a hand-held stereoscope, letting parlor audiences see famous places in apparent three dimensions. The presence of cycles in the street reflects the bicycle craze of the late 1880s and 1890s, when the safety bicycle spread quickly among city riders.
