Sestriere, a high-altitude ski village in the Piedmontese Alps near Turin, is the subject that sets this poster apart from others of its era that promoted Italian winter sports. Printed in Milan by Pizzi & Pizio in 1935, it is a color advertisement designed by Mario Puppo to draw skiers to the slopes. In the 1930s, Italy's winter resorts were becoming fashionable destinations, and Sestriere was being developed as a purpose-built resort under the sponsorship of the Fiat industrialist Giovanni Agnelli. Posters like this one helped present Italy as a place for modern winter leisure, not only for mountain residents.
