Garibaldi's 1860 entry into Naples is the event this print commemorates, and its title, "Entrée à Naples," points to the moment he rode into the city that autumn. Giuseppe Garibaldi, the Italian nationalist who led the Thousand in their campaign to unify the peninsula, had just taken Sicily and then moved up through the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, and the Bourbon king fled Naples shortly before he arrived. The lithograph was produced by Ratellier & Co. in New York and published by George Ward Nichols around 1860, so it reached American audiences while the campaign was still making headlines. The subject listing names horses, which suggests the mounted figure is central to the composition.
