Rather than a view taken on the spot, this print reproduces Oswald Achenbach's 1886 painting of the Festival of Santa Lucia, a celebration tied to the waterfront district of Santa Lucia on the Bay of Naples. Achenbach, a German painter, made his name with landscapes and coastal scenes of southern Italy, and the original canvas was held by the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. The record dates the print only to between 1886 and 1900, so it was likely made soon after the painting appeared, when paintings were often copied in photographs for wider circulation. In black and white, the print keeps the crowded composition and the play of light on the harbor, so the festive mood still comes through.
