The title gives the sitter a papal style he did not hold until 1903, when Giuseppe Sarto, born in 1835, was elected pope and took the name Pius X. The Library of Congress estimates the date as 1880 to 1900, which predates that election, so the print was either issued earlier and retitled later or the date is a rough guess. Photomechanical prints like this one made portraits of churchmen and public figures cheap to reproduce and widely available in the late nineteenth century. The copyright line names Tryphosa Bates Batcheller, a useful starting point for anyone tracing the print's origin.
