Drawn on the spot from the observatory of the Academy of Sciences, this color aquatint offers a panoramic view of St. Petersburg from a single high vantage point, and its title dedicates it to Tsar Alexander I. Published in London by J.A. Atkinson sometime between 1805 and 1807, it is the first of four plates and includes a key that identifies the city's buildings, so viewers can match each landmark on the skyline to its name. The print reflects the British appetite for detailed views of distant European capitals, and it remains useful for studying the city's waterfront as it appeared in the early nineteenth century.
