Few views show the ground where Union Station would stand as plainly as this panorama, which records an open expanse of rail yard and tangled tracks before any of the new building went up. Several railroads, including the Pennsylvania and the Baltimore and Ohio, had been running trains into separate depots around the capital, and the consolidated terminal designed by Daniel Burnham's firm was meant to replace that patchwork. Hand coloring, applied over the black-and-white print, was a common way to add life to such scenes for period viewers. Taken between 1900 and 1907, the image captures the site in the years just before the Beaux-Arts station opened.
