The title sets this silkscreen apart from the usual wartime call to buy bonds or enlist: it borrows the words of the Pledge of Allegiance and pairs them with a phrase about keeping quiet regarding the war, which suggests a more ambivalent message about patriotic conformity. It was produced in January 1943 by the WPA War Services unit in Louisiana under the Federal Art Project, which employed artists to make public posters during the war years. Thomas A. Byrne designed it in color using silkscreen, a stencil process the project used because it could print many copies cheaply on board. The poster shows that wartime public art could question as well as rally.
