Children of the Zirkle family stand at the center of this glass negative, made in Vienna, a small town in Northern Virginia. The record dates it only to a span between 1909 and 1919, and the title comes from unverified notes the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, so the children's identities are not confirmed. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., commercial studio, produced many views and portraits in that period, and its glass plates later came to the Library of Congress. Faint streaks and blemishes on the glass reflect the natural deterioration of its original coating.
