Senator Blease of South Carolina poses in this February 1926 picture with two young women, Virginia and Maxine Loomis, whose connection to him the record does not explain. Blease had served as governor of South Carolina before entering the U.S. Senate in 1925, and his blunt, populist style made him a recognizable figure in Washington. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio working in the capital in the 1920s and 1930s, produced large numbers of portraits of officials and visitors. Streaks and blemishes on the glass negative come from natural deterioration of its original coating.
