Few details survive about this chapel, but the record places it near Berryville, the seat of Clarke County in Virginia's northern Shenandoah Valley. Small rural churches like this one were frequent subjects for the National Photo Company, a commercial firm that photographed towns, landmarks and countryside across the eastern United States in the early twentieth century for sale as views and postcards. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French, and its sleeve carried a newspaper article describing the church, so the surviving text is worth reading alongside the image. Faint streaks on the glass are typical of deterioration in the original coating, not of the scene itself.
