Elihu Root, the New York lawyer and statesman who served as Secretary of War and later as Secretary of State and a Nobel Peace Prize winner, is the subject of this glass negative made in December 1922. The portrait comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that produced a large volume of portraits and views in the early twentieth century. Root was a prominent figure in American public life by then, and the plate is a useful record of how official Washington portraits were made and preserved. Notice the streaks and blemishes on the surface, which the catalogers attribute to deterioration of the original coating.
