The title on this glass negative reads "Saml. Gonpers," which the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve. The library has not verified it, but it most likely refers to Samuel Gompers, the cigar maker who led the American Federation of Labor from its founding in 1886 until his death in 1924. The date is given as about 1922, and the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., firm, made pictures of public figures and events in the capital during this period. Viewers should note the streaks and blemishes in the image, which come from natural deterioration of the original coatings. The negative was a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French.
