Labeled "The Climbers" Engel on its negative sleeve, though the title is unverified, this glass plate may take its name from a surname or from the German word for angel. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio whose large body of negatives records Washington, D.C., and the people who passed through it, made the image sometime between 1909 and 1919. Herbert A. French gave the plate to the Library of Congress in 1947, and its surface shows streaks and blemishes from the natural deterioration of the original coating.
