Few views of Niagara Falls were as familiar in the late 1800s as the one from the Suspension Bridge, which crossed the gorge a short distance below the cataract and linked New York with Ontario. This picture, credited to A.C. and dated 1896 with publication in 1899, frames the falls from that vantage point, where visitors could look upriver at the roar of the water and the mist rising off it. By the 1890s the falls drew steady crowds of tourists, honeymooners and painters, and images like this helped shape how the public imagined the site. The catalog record is sparse on the artist's identity, so the picture is most useful as a window onto how the cataract and its bridges were seen at the turn of the century.
