Among the many Detroit Publishing Company views of Mexico, this one turns to the everyday commerce of San Luis Potosí, where a market square served as the working heart of the city. The glass negative dates to roughly the late 1880s or 1890s, a period when American railroad lines were pushing into northern and central Mexico and bringing photographers along with them. The attribution to William Henry Jackson rests on the catalog of the W.H. Jackson Views published in 1898, which listed the photographer's Mexican work. Markets like this one were favorite subjects for travel photographers, who saw in the crowds, stalls and goods a vivid picture of local life.
