Few holiday scenes from the late 1920s show the season's strain as plainly as this view of the Chicago post office during its Christmas rush. December was the busiest stretch of the year for the mails, when greeting cards and gift parcels swelled the volume that clerks and carriers had to sort, route and deliver on tight schedules. The picture dates to 1929, a year when gift-giving was still running high; that October the stock market crashed. The title puts the mail itself at the center, a reminder of how much of the season's goodwill passed through public post offices.
