The title, "First of all ... Merry Christmas!", sets up a holiday greeting that the ellipsis turns into bad news, and the subject headings point to General Motors, factory layoffs, and the auto industry. Pat Oliphant, a Pulitzer-winning editorial cartoonist, drew this ink-over-pencil piece for the Los Angeles Times Syndicate around 1974. That was a hard stretch for Detroit: the 1973-74 oil embargo pushed buyers away from large cars, and automakers cut production and jobs. Oliphant often used a few quick lines and a bit of irony to comment on such news, so the cartoon is worth reading for its wit as well as its timing.
