Chicago's post office during the 1929 Christmas season is the subject here, a moment when holiday mail and parcels pushed the city's postal workers to their limits. By the late 1920s, parcel post had grown into a major part of the holiday rush, and sorting and delivering it meant long shifts, crowded work floors, and mail piled high for hand processing. Photographs like this one, held in the Library of Congress, record how that seasonal surge looked from inside the building. Look closely at the crowding and the scale of the mail to see why the season was known as a test of the whole system.
