Dressed in Japanese kimonos and photographed in Tokyo, Walter and Poppy Cannon White appear in this 1949 Christmas card. Walter Francis White served as executive secretary of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People for more than two decades, leading its campaigns against lynching and segregation. The card was printed as a halftone, a common method for reproducing photographs in mass-produced materials of the period. Japan was then under American occupation, which gives the setting added significance for a card sent by a prominent American civil rights leader.
