Walter Christmas, a child, made this linocut of palm trees beside a body of water, and the picture survives as a 1933 photographic reproduction of that work. It came out of the Harlem Art Workshop, a program for young people in New York that encouraged printmaking and other visual arts. The Harmon Foundation, which promoted African American artists in the 1920s and 1930s, kept records of such works, and the reproduction preserves a child's simple, bold handling of a tropical seaside scene at a time when prints like this were often shown to wide audiences.
