Here the holiday is staged as a clash of two eras: plum puddings, family gatherings and candle-lit trees on one side, and a jazz band, illicit drinks and a carnival mood on the other. Dated 1922, it captures a moment when Prohibition, in force since 1920, had pushed drinking behind closed doors and dance music was reshaping American parties. The satire reflects a wider worry among older commentators that the traditional family Christmas was giving way to a louder, more pleasure-seeking style of celebration.
