Tipis and Christmas trees share the frame in this view of the evergreen forest on the west side of Glacier National Park, where Flathead families gathered before the holiday. The people shown were Salish, Kootenai and Pend d'Oreille, whose communities lived in western Montana near the park. By the early twentieth century, mission schools and church life had made Christmas a common winter observance among them. The photograph, part of the George Grantham Bain Collection of news pictures, shows how seasonal customs and older ways of camping could coexist in the same place.
