Cars were first admitted to Yellowstone in 1915, and the park needed staffed checkpoints at its entrance roads to count arrivals and collect fees. These entrance stations, built in the rustic style favored by the National Park Service, were among the first structures many motorists passed on their way in. Their design reflected the park's effort to make its buildings blend with the landscape, and the stations show how the automobile changed who could reach the park and how quickly.
