The subject is a memorial to Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin, the German aviation pioneer whose rigid airships carried passengers across Europe and the Atlantic in the years before and after World War I. The record gives no date for the negative, but the Bain News Service, a Washington-based wire photo agency, made many pictures of this kind for American newspapers. Zeppelin's airships, built near Lake Constance, were among the most widely photographed machines of their time, so a monument to their creator would have drawn interest well beyond Germany.
