Captioned as a passenger airplane, this glass negative more likely shows a Zeppelin, the rigid airship developed by Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin's German company, though the title comes from unverified caption data. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that distributed news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century, would have supplied images like this to editors eager to show new technology. Passenger Zeppelins flew commercial routes in Germany before World War I, drawing crowds wherever they landed. The undated plate gives no firm date, so the exact occasion remains unknown.
