Alice Roosevelt, the daughter of President Theodore Roosevelt, sits for this c1902 portrait made by the Washington photographer Frances B. Johnston, whose studio was known for society and official sitters. The record's "No. 1" and copyright notice show that the image was registered as one of a series from the sitting. Alice was in her teens when the photograph was taken, and her public profile was growing quickly as the young daughter of a famously energetic White House family. Her later life as a Washington figure, widely known as "Princess Alice," gives the picture added interest for anyone tracing the Roosevelt family's public image.
