The Horticulture Department of the 1874 Cincinnati Exposition is the subject of this engraving, which Harper's Weekly printed on page 821 of its October 3, 1874, issue. It was made from a sketch by the artist William R. McComas. In the 1870s, weekly illustrated papers such as Harper's depended on engravings like this one to show readers events they could not attend, since halftone photo reproduction was not yet common in print. Expositions of this period displayed regional farm produce, plants, and gardening work, so the scene offers a view of how civic fairs presented agriculture to urban audiences.
