Taken in 1924, this group portrait shows the justices of the U.S. Supreme Court during the tenure of Chief Justice William Howard Taft, a former president who led the Court from 1921 to 1930. The Washington, D.C., studio Harris & Ewing produced many formal portraits of federal officials in this period, and its work gave the government a consistent visual record of its leaders. Such sittings were usually arranged for official and public use, so the picture also shows how the Court presented its dignity to the public in the 1920s.
