Few pictures on the board show a working paper mill, and this watercolor sets its subject against a rocky cliff, a detail the record flags in its subject headings. Its title is inscribed on the back, and it belongs to the John Rubens Smith Collection at the Library of Congress. Smith, an English-born artist who worked in America, made many landscape drawings in the 1820s, and this sheet is typical of his careful attention to terrain. Early Connecticut paper mills relied on river power and rag stock, so the building sits where water and stone met. The record dates the work only to the 1820s, so the exact year remains uncertain.
